A bipartisan group of eight state attorneys general filed consumer-protection lawsuits alleging ChatGPT deceived parents about safety and endangered minors.
The states are Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana, filing separately in state courts. Iowa seeks civil penalties up to $40,000 per violation and notes ChatGPT lists a minimum age of 13 with no age verification. Remedies sought include forcing product-design changes and barring development of self-improving AI models until an independent third party verifies safety measures. It is the most significant coordinated state action against an AI company, arriving as OpenAI prepares for a public listing; Florida filed the first such suit in June.
